  • Nexen Winguard Sport 2

Nexen Tires is a Korean tire manufacturer that was founded as Heung-A Tire Company and has been in tire manufacturing for over 80 years. Nexen is recognized as the first Korean tire company, as they ensure to deliver updated manufacturing equipment in their various product lines like all-season, all-terrain, UHP tires, mud-terrain tires, and many other tire types to meet the driving needs of customers.

Delivering solid winter performance, the Nexen Winguard Sport 2 is ideal to be on performance-oriented cars and offers drivers excellent traction and performance in icy and snowy weather. But is the Winguard Sport 2 the right tire for you? Let’s take a look at this Nexen Winguard Sport 2 review.

    Features and Benefits

    Nexen Winguard Sport 2

Extreme weather conditions make it really hard to stick to one tire type and the best tire to perform and deliver optimal traction and firm grip on wintery and icy roads is a winter tire as they have a deeper tread depth that allows a firm grip keeping your wheel closer to the road while driving on snow and ice. These tires are engineered to perform in extreme temperatures during colder months, plus they are a bit more durable and better on those wet roads than an all-season tire.

If you are looking for strong traction and performance in wet and dry conditions, plus better performance in winter weather you can opt for these tires, as they use flexible rubber compounds that help the tire to grip better on cold, icy, snowy, or slushy roads. Let’s take a look at the Nexen Winguard Sport 2 tire review to help understand all its features and benefits at a glance:

    • Enhanced traction: Built with a 3D Winter kerf for Improved snow performance & guarantee block stiffness to enhance grip in all winter driving conditions.
    • Improved tread wear: This tire is built with durable materials for longer tread life and improved wear throughout the tire’s limited mileage warranty period.
    • Optimized steering response: The shoulder block groove of Winguard Sport 2 along with Dual pitch offers confident vehicle handling, stable cornering, and braking.
    • Reduced hydroplaning: Nexen's zigzag groove tread design quickly channels water away for a wet grip and resist hydroplaning to provide excellent balance and traction on slippery/icy roads.
    • Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake certified: Winguard Sport 2 comes with enhanced performance ability to perform in severe snow conditions.

The wheel size ranges from 15-inch to 20-inch which makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of vehicles on roads today, including compact cars, mid-size sedans, performance sedans, coupes, minivans, and crossovers. Additionally, it is backed by Nexen's total coverage warranty, which includes 36 months of roadside assistance.

    Pros and Cons

The Nexen Winguard Sport 2 indeed is a great tire that offers drivers solid traction and handling performance year-round. But is this really what your vehicle needs? Before deciding to buy the tire or not, let’s first drill down a few factors that can help you decide whether or not the tire is right for you.

    • Better traction on wet and icy roads
    • Longer tread life
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified
    • Supported by Nexen’s 36 Months of Roadside Assistance.

While Nexen makes a good claim about Winguard Sport 2’s performance, some shortcomings may divide opinions.

    • The ride is firmer than its closest premium competitors
    • Cannot be used when temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Tread noise is a slight issue on rough pavement
    • Only available for passenger vehicles

Bought these for my 22 VW GTI. I have the Autobahn with the 18" wheels and Bridgestone Potenza S005 Ultra High Performance Summer tires. We got our first snow in Michigan (maybe an inch or two) and I had absolutely zero control with the summer tires. I went to a meeting a few blocks away and wasn't sure I would make it back home. I ordered these Nexen's and it's a NIGHT AND DAY difference! We got an even bigger snowfall recently and I had total control, little or no slipping, I even went through a figure 8 of two roundabouts next to each other and was not able to break the rear tires loose. Very impressed with these Nexen tires - I've never heard of the brand before this - and even more impressed that these tires are far, far quieter than my summer tires. I didn't realize how much road noise I had with the summer tires until I put these Nexens on. It's going to be hard going back to the summer tires next year... may just end up buying a set of Nexen UHP summer tires too!

I ended up doing a research about these tires after found them on this site. I remembered that a lot of the newer models of Hyundai came with this brand from the factory. I drive now a WRX and in some of the groups people recommend these tires. I live in the PNW, rain is almost daily and these tires are amazing with water and cold weather. Way more comfortable than the summer tires that came with the car. Definitely was a good choice for my needs.

After about a month of window shopping, I bought these Nexens. I've had some more costly brands of winter tires before (on the same vehicle platform), and so far these have surpassed the others overall, in my opinion. Pretty comfy ride without too much give in corners. Grip is good on wet pavement that I've experienced. Haven't had deep snow, grabs hard packed stuff well though. Very pleased with these mid-level winter tires!

F10 550i xDrive Owner here. The Nexens are a really solid choice in the winter. It's almost impossible to get stuck with these things & they're more a more comfortable ride than the Blizzaks. Tread noise is a little more quiet than other brands I've tried in the past. Definitely can't go wrong if you get these!
